Coercive Acts and Unalienable Rights : Why Colonists Joined the Revolution

Lambertville resident Sue Craig, PhD will discuss what had prepared the colonial mindset to turn from seeking redress of their grievances to violent rebellion. Sue will touch on the philosophical foundations of independence, including the legacy of the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution, as well as the natural rights of the Enlightenment, and why these ideas had particular influence on colonial attitudes. In New Jersey, we’ll see how two religious groups brought with them a legacy of opposition to the Crown, along with anti-establishment and anti-authoritative tendencies deeply engrained in their cosmology. Sue will also address the impact of the Great Awakening in the Mid-Atlantic region, in which huge open-air meetings served as a vector, spreading rebellious notions throughout the colonies in the kind of inter-colonial communication that Franklin had sought. Lastly, Sue will look at the immense impact of Tom Paine’s writing to crystallize many of these swirling thoughts and foster a rebellious attitude that demanded independence.
